The journey so far.

  1. First Generation

    Barter

Before money, we had memory and a sense of a fair deal. Value changed hands as people swapped labour for food or shelter, and the only ledger was trust between two people who knew each other. The profession begins here, in the minds of the business owners of the First Generation.

  2. Second Generation

    Bookkeeping

Pacioli gave the world a doorway into the Second Generation. A way to record a transaction and prove it later - double entry. Every debit found its credit, the ledger replaced the handshake, and a craft was born around keeping the books straight.

  3. Third Generation

    Industrial age

Companies grew, balance sheets and capital needed tracking, and the firm started to take the shape we still recognise: a pyramid of partners at the top and rows of grinders at the bottom. Businesses became more complex, as did the Third Generation of accounting and the practices of the day.

  4. Fourth Generation

    Digitalisation

The computer replaced the A3 paper, the computers were connected with LAN cables, and then the cloud made it all wireless. It became quicker and easier than ever to work, with data interchanging between systems, and the Fourth Generation allowed firms to start to focus on serving their clients beyond the data.

  5. Fifth Generation

    The Fifth Generation

Today, the grinding can be done by machines. Firms need to adapt as they have done in the generations before - focusing on the human value that they alone can bring to the table: their judgement, relationships, and the human rapport that a machine simply cannot replicate. The pioneers are rebuilding around that. The rest is still unwritten.

"In recent decades, the models of Maister, Gerber et al have served us well, but the goalposts have moved. Firms of The Fifth Generation need to model themselves around the M's - the magnets, the movers, the makers, the markers, the marshals and the mechanics. Only then can we release the value that our years of experience and our unique human abilities provide us with. It's time to make the change and truly deliver what businesses want and need as part of The Fifth Generation."
